'Shimada' from The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road, Series No. 24
View looking down upon a wide bed of the Oi River, with people waiting on its sand-banks to be taken across.  There was no bridge across the Oi River and travelers had to cross it in a variety of ways as is shown in the picture. It became difficult to cross when heavy rain turned the river into fierce, raging rapids. This print  measures 9" high by 13" long, including the margins.  It is in excellent condition, no tears, holes or stains.  It bears Hiroshige's Kanji cipher, a series and title box in Kanji script, a date seal, along with the original publisher seal, and the later publisher cipher in the margin.  Originally published c1830-1834, this later edition is c1950.
