'Kanaya', Hoeido Edition 1831-1834, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, No. 25

Beyond the wide sandy flats of the river, across which a daimyo's cortège is being carried, rises a jumble of foot hills, in a crevice of which nestles a village. In the background a high range of curiously hump-shaped mountains, printed in graded black from color-blocks only; golden sky at the top.  A panoramic view of the landscape accentuates the expansive flat plain of the dry river bed. A variety of travelers attempt to wade across the river with the help of porters. This print measures 8.75" high by 13" long, including the margins.  It is in excellent condition, no tears, holes or stains.  It bears Hiroshige's Kanji cipher, a series and title box in Kanji script, and a date seal, along with the original publisher's seal, and the later publisher's cipher in the margin.  Originally published c1853, this later edition dates to c1950.   P476
