Portraits of Dances - This wonderfully colorful woodblock print is from an 1899 series by Meiji artist Tsukioka Koun illustrating a variety of kabuki dances. These attractive designs feature colorful figures set against more subdued backgrounds, focusing attention on the characters while suggesting a setting. One actor, the female holds a mask in one hand and a bow in the other. The male carries the arrows. This image is beautifully drawn and printed with fine line work and detail, including fine bokashi shading. The title cartouche has fine detailed embossing, very nice. This print is from a rarely seen series, and dates to c1899 in the lifetime of the artist. It is in very good condition with just general normal wear.  P2013
