'Unread Title'

  • watercolor gouache painting depicts a woman poling a narrow canoe. She is dressed in traditional 1960s clothing of the period in Thailand. A village is noted in the distance. This painting presents like a block print and is dominated in brown hues. It is marked with a three-character code, perhaps its title, but we cannot read it. It is numbered 1/10 and signed 'Thong Chai' and dated '67. The artist, Thongchai Rakpathum produced a series of numbered edition paintings in 1967 and this is number 12, as noted in the far right lower corner. He participated in the Thailand 18th National Art Exhibition in 1967 and won an Award in Silver for Painting (BIO on backside). The sight size is 21" x 15", and its gold tone wood frame with non-glare glass measures 23" x 17". The artist's name and city are written in pencil on the backside, likely recorded by the buyer. This gouache painting captures the traditional Thai imagery of old Siam, with hints to the modernization of the 1960s era. I apologize for any glare in the photos. print presents quite handsomely.   P7544             $295.00
