This book of 'Flowers', many in the form of fans, was published by Maria Gabo in the 1930s. Gabô was a very skillful woodblock printing house, dated September 1938. The prints were executed by two of the most celebrated Kyoto artists of the day, Kobayashi Kanji (1892-1974), a graduate of Kyoto College of Fine Arts, and Matsumura Suihô (dates unknown), a designer of the Kyoto School, and creator of the series of 'Snowflake' prints. This is a complete volume, with 15 flower prints in the album, including Cherry, Rose, Chrysanthemum, Rape, Dandelion, Hollyhock, Azalea, Eggplant, Cockscomb, Chinese Smilax and more. These painterly style woodblocks are embellished with all the effects of a deluxe production, bokashi, mica, overprinting, gauffage, etc. Each print bears the artist's cipher, and the frontispiece also titles and dates the am. The original jacket holds the body of this folding album. The faux bone ties have lost their loops, but the titles and information are intact. The first title page is cleanly separated from the first print, but complete. The large prints are in excellent condition. It is rather unusual to find an album that has not been separated for its prints. It measures 16.5" long by 11.5" wide.
