  • This woodblock print depicts the lovers Umegawa and Chubei under an umbrella. It is from the Series 'Eight Pledges at Lovers' Meetings' originally produced c1790, and shows the happy companionship of the lovers. The 'Returning Sails' cartouche accompanies the title box. This edition dates to c1920.  This woodblock is in superb condition, with neatly trimmed margins on the right and bottom.
    Kitagawa Utamaro (1750-1806) was a Japanese artist who was considered the prominent ukiyo-e artist of the late 18th century. His early work focused on actor portraits and theater programs. He gained immense fame for his single portraits of idealized females in his beautiful women series.
