'Naniwaya Okita and Actor Iwai Hanshirô IV'

This woodblock print depicts a double portrait of the courtesan Okita of the Naniwaya and the actor Iwai Hanshirô IV. The elegantly dressed woman holding a fan inscribed with a poem signed Tojaku, Hanshiro’s poetry name, the actor holding a brush on the left; white mica ground, signed Shunchō ga, along with a circular seal. The print is unframed. It likely dates to c1900. It is in overall good condition, with a small amount of edge wear at the bottom margin, which has been slightly trimmed, but could easily be covered with a mat. This original woodblock measures 11.75" x 8.5". The name Shuncho is written in pencil on the lower verso.
