Shinano Province Canal Miniature Crepe Print
This miniature crepe print depicts a canal scene, with a fisherman on a walking bridge, and travelers making their way. This is a crepe print, known as chirimen-gami-e. Crepes were introduced as early as 1800, with a resurgence in the 1880s with the advent of crepe-paper books to satisfy a growing Western market. Best known are those published by the Hasegawa company, which was opened in 1885. Their chirimen-gami publications were especially popular for children's books, as the crepe paper was somewhat resistant to tearing and thus had a better chance of surviving handling by children. It is in good condition. The print, on its original mat, measures 2.5" x 3.75", and it is framed in a simple black frame measuring 5.5" x 5.75".
