This fan print depicts a young beauty hurrying through the rain. She carries her lantern close to her body beneath the umbrella, protecting its flame. In nineteenth-century Japan the fan not only provided relief from the oppressive heat, it became a fashionable representation of summer. In theaters, fans were associated with dramatic moments; on the streets people carried fans bearing the marks of favorite actors. The fan also had a special place in prints. Artists depicted them in many scenes, and some prints were also designed to be cut and fit onto a standard bamboo fan framework. This series was originally published c1853. This later edition dates to c1930. It is from the famous Tokyo publisher Adachi, one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Adachi woodblocks were printed to the highest standards of quality with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images, such as this one by Kuniyoshi. This print measures 9.5" x 13.5". It is in excellent condition. It bears all the seals on the print, and the Adachi seals are noted on the back of the print.
