'Mount Fuji and Sailboats on Lake'
This incredible watercolor depicts Mount Fuji in all its glory. It was painted from the perspective of Motosu Lake in the Yamanashi Prefecture, which is one of the lakes in the 5-lake region at the base of Mount Fuji. Sei Niimi, also known as Saburo was a watercolor artist working pre-war. His works from the 1920 period are often large, like this one. Unlike a woodblock, which is often produced as an edition, Niimi's watercolors are each one-of-a-kind, that is, painted one at a time. It is signed 'S. Niimi' in the lower corner of the artwork. His dates are unknown, except that it appears his earliest works can be traced to the late teens into1920 and through to the 1940s. His works from the 30s-40s tend to be smaller 8 x 10 size watercolors, not large as in his earlier works. We believe this watercolor is in its original frame, c1920. It has lush colors and presents very much like a woodblock print. This print measures 13.25" high by 19.25" across", and the frame measures 17.5" x 23.5", a very nice wood and gold tone frame.
