'Rest' 1936 from the Series New Modern Print Collection, Volume 1
This woodblock print depicts a lovely portrait of a woman seated at rest in a beautiful striped kimono. 'Rest' or 'Ikoi' presents a young woman relaxing on a cushioned seat, her arm resting on a pillow and her hand holding a folded fan. Her pose is informal, and perhaps she is taking a break from a busy day. This attractive design from a fairly rare 1936 shin-hanga series titled the "New Modern Print Collection" was included in a set of ten prints assembled by the Japan Print Association (Nihon Shin Hanga Kyôkai) in 1936 by ten prominent artists and published by Onodo Mototsugu in two volumes of five prints in each folio. This print by Nagatochi, was included in Volume 1. Also contributing a design were Yoshida Hiroshi, Paul Jacoulet and Ishikawa Toraji, so Nagatochi was in great company. Nagatochi painted many images of women, respecting the ukiyo-e of old, but presenting a more modern presentation of the 'beauty'. This print dates to 1936 when the original folios were produced. It bears Nagatochi's artist cipher and seal, along with its title and date in Kanji script. It is in excellent original condition with soft, subtle and muted tones. The print measures 16" x 11". It is matted in ivory and housed in a black frame measuring 19" x 15". P8792 $395.00
