  • Origin: Japan
  • Date/Period: c1940
  • Materials: Woodblock Print
  • Size: 15" x 10"

Series: Thirty-six Views of Fuji (No. 33) This woodblock depicts Mishima Pass, which is in a mountainous area to the north of Mount Fuji. A towering cypress tree is embraced by travelers who express their exuberance and triumph at reaching the ancient tree. Even Mount Fuji in the distance is dwarfed by the monumental tree. The contrast of the small human figures and the giant natural forms reveals Hokusais empathy with the travelers. This print is in excellent condition, no toning, tears, pinholes or blemishes. There are tape marks at the top rear corners from a previous matting. This is a later edition c1940s.
