'A Lady with a Fan'

This original watercolor/block-style painting depicts a woman, seated by a plant stand and fanning herself with a traditional folding fan. She is beautifully attired in a deep blue dress with white decoration. It has a very modern and contemporary style, edgy, yet refreshing in its simplicity. This painting is well-signed with the artist's chop marks. The painting sight size under its double-mat in ivory with a black bead is about 10" square, and the frame measures 14.5" square. This watercolor is in excellent original condition. The colors are superb, and the imagery is quite pleasing. Hu Yongkai is one of the most popular Chinese artists among Western collectors. He was born in Beijing and studied at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, afterwards teaching at the Fine Arts Institute of Shanghai University. In 1988, he moved to Hong Kong before emigrating to the U.S. in 1992. He now divides his time between Hong Kong, Beijing and Shenzhen. His works provide a unique interpretation of traditional Chinese paintings and Western figuration.
